On the 30 June 2015, eleven members of Liverpool University Air Squadron and one staff member deployed to Iceland for an adventurous training expedition Ex Northern Light. Flying from Manchester Airport into Keflavik on day 1 of the expedition, we took all equipment that we would be using over the 10 day exped. We traveled with the Mountain bikes and BOB trailers that would be used for the mountain biking aspect of the trip. As soon as we landed and cleared through immigration and customs we reassembled the bikes, collected the hire car and split into two groups. Each day we had one group cycling and one walking, the group walking had the hire car and would meet up with the cyclists at the end of each day after hiking around areas of interest. The first night was spent camping at the Lava Hostel in Hafnarfjardar. Day 2 consisted of a long bike ride for the cycling group in dreadful weather conditions, with the campsite in Thingvellir national park. Day 3 was spent setting up for the wild camp, with the group that were walking finding a place to pitch their tents in a valley between two peaks with fresh water supply - once set up we climbed one of the peaks that was below the snow line. Day 4 was spent coming down from the campsite and visiting some of the tourist sites at Gulfoss and Geyser before meeting up with the other group at our campsite in Fludir. Day 5 we cycled from Fludir to Hveragerdi with moving onto Grindavik over day 6. We originally planned to continWe spent 2 nights at Grindavik where we had a rest day and took in local sights including the black sand beaches and the lake at Kleifarvatn. Day 8 we cycled from Grindavik to around the coast line to a campsite in the Village of Sandgerdi for the last night camping. On day 9 we cycled from Sandgerdi to the town of Keflavik where we stayed in the Airport hostel so we could prepare the kit for transit back to Manchester Airport in early morning of day 10 on the 9 July 2015. We flew back on the 9th and travelled back to RAF Woodvale in station MT.
